On the 17th of October 2019 Coniston Public School hosted some of the local basketball players from Illawarra Hawks; LaMelo Ball, Angus Glover and Todd Blanchfield.
These basketball players and young ambassadors came to volunteer and help us improve our basketball skills. Students participated in games that involved using skills like running, shooting, concentration and listening. For their first game, they played Inside Outside. For this game, one needs listening, movement and coordination skills. It involves making one side of the line in and the other side out, and jumping to the side that gets called by the instructor. It was important to not be fooled easily when the instructor said the same thing twice in a row. Another one of the games that they played was Golden Child. For this they had 2 equal teams, a basketball hoop and a basketball. The first team ran around half-court until they made it back home, or the basketball which the other team’s shot went in. The aim of this game was to have as many runners to home as possible. The person at the end of the line of runners is the ‘Golden Child,’ who can let the other runners who had to sit down, stand up and keep running by tapping them on the head. The visiting players signed shirts for the students partaking in the lesson. The students also received a guide called “Healthy Habits” which is all about healthy eating and activities. It was an invaluable experience and Coniston enjoyed it immensely.
